Anxiety and depression

“You are allowed to feel messed up and inside out. It doesn’t mean you’re defective – it just means you’re human.”

— David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

Sound familiar?

  • Life feels worthless…

  • I feel sad all the time…

  • I’m worried all the time…

  • Life seems overwhelming…

  • Why can’t I do anything right…

  • The smallest things bother me…

  • I’m lonely but want to be left alone…

When anxiety or depression knocks…

Life seems empty. You feel like a shell of your former self.

You may be suffering from anxiety or depression.

Sometimes, life events can cause these feelings. But they can also come out of nowhere, from the inside out, with no apparent rhyme or reason.

How do I know if I live with anxiety?

If you’re struggling with anxiety, you might be exhausted by excessive worry or dread related to your job, health, other people’s opinions, or various other things. You may also be experience restlessness, irritability, hyper-awareness of your surroundings and frequent muscle tension. It’s feels impossible to relax and that there is a constant inner conflict.

How do I know if I live with depression?

If you’re suffering from the dark cloud of depression, you might find that it feels like the colour and joy has been drained out of life. Almost like the cloud of depression has blocked out the light of the sun in every area of your life.

You can’t enjoy the things you used to love and aren’t able to get motivated. You could be feeling worthless or guilty because you feel like you are going to be stuck in a rut forever.

You might also notice that your brain feels foggy, concentration is something of the past, your energy is continuously in need of a top up, and you feel sad and down for extended periods.

You may find you’re sleeping a lot and can’t get out of bed in the morning. Or you might have the opposite problem and not be able to sleep at all.

You feel like you have to continuously push a heavy boulder uphill, except you are getting nowhere. It is hard to remember the last time you were truly happy.

It’s such a heavy burden

The grip of anxiety and depression can be so all-encompassing that – merely trying to put it into words – can feel overwhelming.

Finding joy in the little things is challenging. Your relationships suffer from a deep sadness you can’t seem to shake. You feel like you will never be friends with happiness again.

You can’t take a single step without jumping at your own shadow, fearing what could be right around the corner.

You wonder if you’ll ever be yourself again. Sometimes, you’re even tempted to give up – but don’t!
